While everyone’s hair grows at somewhat different rates, the average growth rate is one-quarter inch per month. There are, however, many things you can do to promote healthy hair growth. As with any care regime, it’s important that you are dedicated and diligent. Maintain proper care, and you’ll see your hair grow more quickly. In addition, it will look healthier and shinier.
Get regular trims. You must trim off dead and split ends, or the damage can creep up the entire hair shaft. Generally, you should get your hair trimmed every six to 12 weeks.
Use a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment on your hair. Such treatments deeply penetrate the hair shaft, making for healthier hair. When your hair is in good condition, it will grow more quickly and look better.
Massage your scalp. This increases circulation so blood and nutrients can reach your hair follicles more easily, thereby encouraging hair growth. Use steady pressure to massage your scalp for two to three minutes at least twice daily.
Consume protein in meat, legumes, nuts and dairy products. Hair is made from protein, so protein is essential to its growth process. If your diet is low in protein, you may experience thinning hair.
Eat a well-balanced diet. Proper nutrition is key to healthy hair growth. Consume foods that are rich in folic acid and beta carotene, as both improve hair growth. You can find folic acid in green vegetables, soy beans and nuts. Sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, onions and peppers all contain beta carotene.
Avoid heated appliances. Blow dyers, hot rollers, curling irons and straightening irons are all harsh on hair. If you regularly use such devices, your hair will become damaged and will not grow as well. You should also avoid rinsing your hair with hot water. Opt for warm water instead.
Be gentle with your hair, particularly when it’s wet. Hair is at its most vulnerable to damage and breakage when it is wet. Use a wide-toothed comb rather than a brush to de-tangle your hair. A comb will be gentler and less likely to pull your strands.
Get sufficient sleep. If you aren’t adequately rested, all your body’s systems suffer, including its ability to grow hair. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep nightly to ensure optimal hair growth.
